LAYING BEDSORES TO REST:

Mattress Pad Reduces Pressure by 51%

written and prepared by eluxurysupply.com

Bedsores can be a danger to us all,

but those with limited mobility are particularly susceptible. This includes, but is not limited to, those recovering from surgery, with various injuries, in a wheelchair, on bed rest, or the elderly. Essentially, those who must lie or sit most of the day without the ability to easily adjust positions are at risk and should consider taking action to mitigate the chances of developing a painful bedsore. A mattress pad is your first line of defense.

Mitigate the chances of developing a painful bedsore

THE EVIDENCE

A 2009 study by an independent test lab from Princeton’s Rehabilitation Hospital and Nursing Care Unit found that both overall pressure and specific peak pressure was greatly reduced when volunteers lay on their backs or sides while using an eLuxurySupply Mattress Pad. The following heat maps from study clearly depict the difference between the pressure placed on a person’s body while lying atop only a mattress versus a mattress with a mattress pad on top. The goal here is to see how pressure points change. Ideally, pressure will be reduced, which not only promotes comfort, but also aids in the healing of bedsores and prevents new ones from forming.

01MATTRESS ONLY

Female, 125lbs, Back Sleeper Mattress ONLY

Here, our volunteer is lying on a standard mattress only. The areas shown in red around the head, buttocks, and feet indicate areas of high pressure that are most susceptible to bedsore.

Lying on the same mattress with the addition of our mattress pad, you can see much less indication of pressure. Specifically note that the only red area of high pressure in is under her head.

pressure was reduced overall by 20% and in peak areas by 51%.

…pressure was reduced overall by 20% and in peak areas by 51%.These heat maps offer a very clear representation of just how much pressure relief a mattress pad can offer a person who sleeps on his or her back every night. These dramatic results are also reflected in the numbers. The volunteer on her back (above) weighs 125 pounds. By adding our mattress pad, pressure was reduced overall by 20% and peak areas by 51%. Of course these results only reflect a person that opts to sleep on his or her back. What about the side sleepers? Below are the results from our second volunteer who chose to sleep on his side.

03MATTRESS ONLY

Male, 175lbs, Side Sleeper Mattress ONLY

Our second volunteer, seen here, is a male lying on his side. The areas of high pressure are localized around the hips, chest, and arms.

Again, just by adding our mattress pad, you can see much less indication of pressure. Note the drastic reduction of pressure in the upper body areas.

WHAT IS A BEDSORE?

Often referred to as pressure sores, bedsores develop when constant pressure is sustained at one particular location of the body, cutting off or limiting blood flow. Thinned or stretched skin or veins from age or illness, or from stretching out in bed, can speed the emergence of a bedsore. These sores can be much more than a simple nuisance. In fact, they can be deadly if left untreated. One noteworthy example: In 2004, popular actor Christopher Reeve died from complications of an infected bedsore.1

If left untreated, bedsores can lead to hospitalization. Seek medical attention if you notice a sore developing.

As with any ailment, the sooner you notice and treat a bedsore the better. With proper time and treatment, recovery is very possible. Can all of this be avoided? After all, the best treatment is always prevention. The answer is yes.

As outlined in an article from the University of Southern California’s Pressure Ulcer Prevention Project, bedsores develop in stages.2 Initially, a bedsore looks like a spot of red on the skin, and many people are apt to overlook this. Over time however, this spot can break into an open wound and develop into a larger, deeper infection. This is where the danger lies. An infection requires immediate and aggressive treatment, but those with suppressed immune systems or compromised health may not be able to treat such an infection with success. Unfortunately, this can ultimately be fatal.

HOW CAN I PREVENT BEDSORES?

A document released by the University of Washington’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in 2009 reports that 95% of bedsores are preventable.3 If this is the case, then how might we prevent them?

95% of bedsores
are preventable.

Preventing bed sores is all about relieving extended and sustained pressure through a simple balancing act: placing less pressure on susceptible areas while consistently supporting stronger areas of the body. Movement is a key factor in keeping blood flowing and bed sores at bay, but this is frankly not a possibility for those forced to remain bedridden for extended periods of time. Thus, the bed he/she is resting upon ought to support his/her strongest areas and bring relief to sensitive areas in order to prevent bedsores over the long term. Put simply: this is accomplished by utilizing a mattress pad like our Pressure Relief Mattress Pad.
